    Summary: 
    The professor and the madman are two men involved in writing the Oxford English Dictionary, which organized the sprawling English language. The professor, James Murray was the distinguished editor of the OED project and Dr. William Chestor Minor, a surgeon from New Haven, Connecticut was one of thousands of contributors to the project. Minor sent thousands of contributions and Professor Murray invited him to visit him at Oxford, but Minor refused even though he was only fifty miles away in Crowthorne. After two decades of correspondence, Murray finally decides to visit and discovers that Minor is a murderer, clinically insane and locked up in England's Broadmoor asylum for criminal lunatics.
